Dr S Ramkumar’s passion towards educating youngsters, mentoring them and also innovating towards better means of livelihood to farmers set to continue even after retirement.

In the year 2005, when the Manthan Award, a prestigious national laurel presented to innovations in the e-inclusion and e-learning on digital services for the poor, came calling, it was also an honour bestowed on Dr S Ramkumar’s and his team’s passion for use of technology towards enhancing the lives of farmers and livestock producers in the country. The award had held aloft his achievements in the production of the best accessible digital content services for the poor.
After more than 37 years of imparting innovative ideas that have proved immensely helpful for the farming community Dr. Ramkumar is now set to retire as professor from the Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (RIVER), Puducherry, India. Retirement aside, his passion for digital content and innovative use of technology that would aid farmers, livestock producers and Entrepreneurs, would indeed stay on. His belief in the power of education towards empowering people is sure to help him in his deployment of skills and experience to help others in the days ahead.

Young minds mentored by Dr. S. Ramkumar would vouch for his capabilities in helping them imbibe visionary learning and entrepreneurship. The rich and productive 37 years of mentoring young people, and going about conducting research even as holding various academic and administrative positions, have stood the education management arena in good stead, as have been endorsed by the many laurels that RIVER, Puducherry, and other institutions he worked and led have received for long.
With interests in domains including livestock production and management, animal health, agricultural extension, Entrepreneurship and Digital Empowerment, Dr. Ramkumar has made a world of a difference working with farmers and livestock owners, and hand holding them towards better lives and income generation. A graduate of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Thrissur, Kerala, he had taken his academic pursuits to a whole new level as he went about securing his PhD and post-doctoral tenure in extension from the University of Reading, United Kingdom with prestigious scholarships.

His works in the veterinary and animal sciences arena have been well documented in as many as 60 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals during his stint with KAVEASU and RIVER. The two books he has co-authored on livestock production and management add muscle to the efforts that he has put in towards improving and empowering the lives of people who toil to provide the country with its daily bread.
Significant about his work in the domain he has been passionate about is that he has worked hard towards establishing higher education institutions in the veterinary science and entrepreneurship space. Dr Ramkumar has always pursued new levels of imparting education, empowering people and making them self-reliant. Students and Faculty in extension science in India, and those at the University of Reading, the UK, have been fortunate enough to be recipients of the knowledge imparted by the educationist for quite a few years, indeed. Dr S Ramkumar has proved his worth by sharing all innovative pedagogical approaches he had devised and pursued for almost four decades at these centre of education. A look at the profiles of his students, bear testimony to the fact that he has been a great teacher and mentor all through.

His efforts at carving a niche as the Founder-Director of the Entrepreneurship Directorate, Kerala Veterinary University during the 2011-2014 period stands testimony to this vision. He also serves as the Founder-Director at the Entrepreneurship Development cell, Department of Industries Government of Puducherry. It is noteworthy that the Innovation Cafe worked out at the CII in Puducherry continues to be one of the best novel programs that has ever gone on stream in the field of entrepreneurship in the country.

He has made a visible mark as Dean of the RAJIV GANDHI INSTITUTE OF VETERINARY EDUCATION AND RESEARCH(RIVER) – Puducherry, during the 2017 -2021 period (which includes the COVID pandemic years). Prof, has also been Project Leader for four international Research Projects with various Universities in the UK and India and Project Associate for many Research programs between 2000 and 2014.
Mentoring youngsters who look toward pursuing careers in the veterinary and animal sciences horizon stays close to the professor’s heart and he has made sure that young people get ideas galore to carry with them as they attend his lectures at agricultural, veterinary, dairy and education conferences, and entrepreneurship meets, from time to time. He has also penned his thoughts on varied topics in his book titled STRANDOM, which came out in 2020.
As Dr. S Ramkumar walks away from his official duties to a new world of retirement, his works seldom cease. For, his passion towards educating youngsters, mentoring them and also innovating towards better means of livelihood to farmers, plays on. The veterinary and animal sciences, extension, education and entrepreneurship domains would well expect much more to come from this man of incessant ideas.
