Various views on emergence of this rewiring for this Generation are looked into. From “play based childhood” to “phone based childhood” and the impact the social media, games and apps that Companies that strive to maximize “engagement” by using psychological tricks to keep young people clicking are the jworst offenders. They hooked children during vulnerable developmental stages, while their brains were rapidly rewiring in response to incoming stimulation.
Parenting became more challenging in terms of media use among children. The control on virtual media was more independent to the young since even parents were not sure or understand what was going on there.
As the author says “My central claim in this book that these two trends – overprotection in the real world and under protection in the virtual world – are the major reasons why children born after 1995 became the anxious generation.”
Adults in in Gen X and prior generations have not experienced much of a rise in clinical depression or disorders since 2010.
